Jennifer's story: I cannot say enough about the impact Joelle had on the lead up to and birth of our son. Her positive energy, guidance and trust in me and the process gave us strength and courage to have the birth we wanted. When I was ready to settle for a midwife who was not my choice, she helped me to take control of the situation and find a better option. She also made sure that the tub was filled and I was in it when she saw how quickly my labour was progressing. If she hadn't spoken up about it, I would never have made it in there in time. After having had a couple out-of-control births filled with regrets, she helped us to have a natural, beautiful, dare I say perfect, experience. We are very grateful.
Tanya's story: Leading up to the birth of my third baby, I was keen to explore a “better way” to labour and birth my son. My first two birth experiences although not horrific were not ideal and never felt like I ever really got the hang of labour and certainly didn’t enjoy the experience.
I looked into a number of different child birth classes, but found that the guidance and information provided by Joelle and Birth Rhythms was by far the most compressive and practical approach to managing childbirth that
I had found. Particularly as I had already had my two daughters naturally,
I found Joelle’s careful consideration of my previous birth experiences extremely helpful.
During my pregnancy, Birth Rhythms provided a number of different pain management strategies to help minimise the intensity of labour and childbirth. The variety of approaches towards pain management allowed me to find the “right fit” for me and my husband. Joelle’s careful discussions and dialogue allowed both of us to reflect on our previous childbirth experiences both individually and as a couple and to think about the things I hoped to change this time around. Joelle’s compassion and understanding allowed both of us to feel completely relaxed and supported throughout this turbulent time in our lives. By focusing on all facets of labour, delivery and life after my son’s arrival, Joelle helped me to analyse my own strengths and weaknesses and helped me to find my own “labouring” voice. I had always felt like a bit of a passenger (either to my own labouring body or to the doctors and nurses overseeing my care) in my previous two deliveries, so this time around I was pleased when I was able to feel confident in the knowledge that it was MY LABOUR and I needed to speak up! (“No I don’t want the syntocinon drip thanks, I’m very happy with the current progress of my labour!”)
With Joelle’s professional support I was able to manage most of my labour without any pain relief, and at no time did I feel out of control or fatigued. I was able to appreciate each of the different stages and physical requirements of my labour and was able to pace myself both physically and mentally throughout the various stages. My husband was also able to me more involved in this labour and delivery as I was better able to communicate my changing needs to him. I can honestly say that thanks to Joelle, I was eagerly waiting until the time I could give it my all and push my (nearly 10 pound) son out and was triumphant upon his arrival. Previously, the final part of labour was an arduous process and a means to an end (and quite scary too). The birth of my son was a completely different (and much more positive) experience than my previous deliveries and Joelle helped me to find my own confidence, peace and focus that allowed this to happen. My mother commented on how much more relaxed and refreshed I looked straight after my son’s delivery – and I have Joelle to thank for it!
